13. Stronger Together?

Chapter 13

Stronger Together?

There was an unexpected outcome from the tragedy of Ma’s illness: it opened up a gap for the return of Vuyo.

Leaving his children with his mother, Vuyo was making regular trips to Mandla’s surgery, ostensibly to check on what he thought was a hatchet job on stitching his bullet wound at Edenvale Hospital, but probably to get an insight of what was happening in his old world. Of course, Mandla filled me in on the events.

On leaving the Edenvale Hospital, Vuyo had gone to his mother’s house where, Mandla told me, he was met with sympathy from his family on how wrong his union with that Model-C girl had been anyway and an ‘I-told-you-so’ or four from his mother.

Unfortunately for Vuyo’s family, however wrong or right his union with Siz might have been, he was no longer accustomed to loxion girls whose only ambition, he would tell Mandla when he went limping into the surgery, was to ensure that the man they were talking to would be able to buy them their next quart of Hansa. ‘Man I fucked up,’ he would whine to Mandla. ‘I miss her intellect, her sense of humour. I miss the way she knows what she wants from life, and the way she loves so unconditionally. I met an ex last week and tried to engage her in conversation about something I had seen on BBC news, but she had no idea what I was talking about.’ This of course was all said in the hope that Mandla would repeat it to me and I would repeat it to Siz, and I knew this, but I was not getting involved in case he dogged her again.

They say love can conquer all, and in the case of Siz and Vuyo it did. Mandla told me how broken Vuyo was when he told him about Ma. ‘Babes, he was torn. He knows Siz’s mother doesn’t like him but he keeps saying, “I messed up. I want to be there for Siz.” He knows that it has to be difficult for her.’

To which I answered, ‘Yeah right.’

But what Vuyo felt for Siz was obviously stronger than my cynicism, because not long after he heard the news, he managed to get some cajones and go and meet Siz personally. Knowing as he did that Siz was a person who did not like scenes (in spite of the one she had caused at his mother’s house), he decided to make sure she heard him out by pitching up at her office without prior notice. The best and worst thing about her office was that it was open-plan so she could not very well raise her voice and yell, no matter how she felt.

I am not sure that Siz would have taken him back were it not for two reasons. Lauren and I had pointed out her first mistake to her: When she got married to Vuyo, wearing the rose-coloured glasses of love, believing in the ‘happily ever after’ and maybe also wanting to defy Ma, she married in community of property.
